From Booklist

Stamz, a major radio personality in Chicago in the 1950s, helped to establish the black radio market and provide broader airing of rhythm and blues music. Born in Memphis in 1906, he came to Chicago as a youth, part of the Great Migration looking for jobs and relief from Jim Crow laws. A born hustler, he worked in minstrelsy and on the margins of show business before landing a job as a disc jockey. Stamz went on to become a dominant talent at the white-owned station, luring advertisers with innovative marketing campaigns. In 1963, caught in the payola scandal of the time, he served prison time for tax evasion. In his own voice, Stamz describes the rough-and-tumble world of early soul radio, the payola system that supplied everything from drugs to food, and the relationships between disc jockeys and independent record companies. He also describes his political activism, advocating for benefits for musicians and disc jockeys. Roberts, drawing on research and a seven-year collaboration with Stamz, provides broader context for the career of a pioneer in black radio. --Vanessa Bush

A welcome addition to what we know about the evolution of black radio."--Journal of Illinois History  “This story makes an indelible contribution to the field of African American studies. Readers not only get a story that opens them to the world of Richard Stamz; it opens them to the world that African Americans had made for themselves in the last century.”--Robert Pruter, from the foreword of Give 'Em Soul, Richard!

I am so thrilled to have in my possession another radio project and on one of America's most outstanding Radio Announcers; i.e. Richard Stamz. This book gives you the full soul of Richard and if you never knew him, after reading this book you will feel as if you had finally met him. Richard was very passionate about his broadcasting career and the book emphasizes it and how hard it was to be an African American in the society inwhich he was raised and worked in. He lived a full life and enjoyed sharing his stories with everyone and finally, it's packaged into what he was all about... "Soul"!The book is a quick read and I wish he had more involved details on the industry ups and downs; however, it does mention things that others never would in their writings and all of it is the total truth.Marsha Washington George, Author - Black Radio...Winner Takes All!

excellent read , from the minds of a master....
