I really like this author. This book, however, requires the reader to accept a lot of storyline between what happened in the last book and before this book.We are asked to accept that this upright, moral man has drifted so far from his core values that he became such a rotten alcoholic that his wife and he, both, betray their marital vows repeatedly. His moral compass is of a man who has awakened from a period of abject rejection of the core values he has heretofore adhered to.That is BEFORE the book begins. He, then, is drawn into a legal situation in which he must again abandon his conscience to represent the defendant. Remember, he has been a straight arrow, a true believer and practitioner of pure justice. It is almost a whip lash feeling to take it all in.His reconciliation with his wife is awkward and jerky. The story lines , there are two, are pretty loosely tied together. Oh, let's not forget the assumption of the author that we will accept a rotten, belligerent, tyrant of a judge with no compunction for staying in the lines of acceptable jurisprudence.I would recommend reading this simply to sustain the continuity of the main characters' lives. It will not keep me from reading the next one.

All of Ellsworth's books are enjoyably readable and while not particularly heavy in subject matter, hold the readers interest quite well. His courtroom/legal descriptions are excellent and geared towards the layman, not other attorneys. I would suggest to new readers that they start with book one and work their way through as the books chronicle the life and times of the protagonist - Thaddeus Murfee. Knowing how he go to where he is in any given book just makes them that much more enjoyable. One of the few independent writers where I pre-order the book!

I read this author's novel Unspeakable Prayers & thoroughly enjoyed it. I gave that novel a great, two thumbs up review...I hate this novel & probably will never read any of his work ever again. It left such a poor impression on me, I would gladly boycott all his novels. Here's why:According to Mr. Ellsworth:All American law enforcement agencies are predatory, biased & corrupt. All American criminal justice & judiciary systems are predatory, biased & corrupt. They exist merely to prey on innocent, unsuspecting victims. There is no other function for them, except to possibly highlight how wonderful the protagonist truly is...The protagonist is a recovering alcoholic who is portrayed in the most sympathetic manner possible. He can do no wrong, but if he does, it's entirely forgivable. Really. After reading only 2 novels by Mr. Ellsworth I'm done with him. I refuse to support this type of tin foil hat conspiracy tripe.Mr. Ellsworth: Hatred for authority is a trite & overused genre. Branch out. Stretch your 'talents'.

Story was predictable. Was offended when main character has to take a year off for a suspension and takes a "mindless job" as a trucker in the North Dakota oil fields. He is separated from his wife and kid, back in Chicago then suddenly, they are back living together.I don't think anyone would tolerate judges acting like he depicts them. And he really trashes the Native American population.Had some problems with continuity, some things just didn't add up. The characters all have background to explain their actions, but seems too pat.Turquoise is bland, you don't really feel for her.Other books by this author about Thad, but I won't be reading them. Didn't specifically like Thad or his wife. I guess the best way to put it is that every character in the book is formula. Abused Indian, brash young lawyer, med school wife also abused Indian, wise old Indian sheepherder.

The cover of this book while beautiful, made me think it wasn't going to be a book for me. I started reading reviews and the books description which changed my mind and began a great read. I was thoroughly entertained and got so involved with the characters that this book quickly became one that I could not put down. Read it straight through my meals and all. I simply enjoyed every minute of it.I believe the author is brilliant. He admits that he is writing fiction after all so uses that literary license for all the book from geography to points of law that sounds better than the real ones-for his book. He pulls you into not only each character but the world around them too. It's believable and I actually had to remind myself if that fact more than once. Do remember though, there are some real problems addressed here that we all should take a closer interest in. I see that he has other books and I can't wait to read them all! The stories are real without dragging you through the muck. To me an author that can get and keep your interest without having to resort to lots of bad language and grizzly descriptions, well that's a truly talented writer. I do suggest you read this book and every other one of his you can find. I found myself smiling, laughing, so mad I wanted to spit and we'll, completely caught up in what I was reading. I believe you'll find yourself entertained and glad you found this author. Yes, I recommend this book! :)HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! :D

Another well written, very imaginative story by Mr. Ellsworth. This was actually two trials, but the results of the second trial would be disastrous for the Not Guilty verdict handed down in the first trial. I greatly enjoy the legal court scenes in this and other books by the author.
