I just received this book from Amazon yesterday late afternoon. I’ve already finished reading it from cover to cover. And this is coming from someone who hates to read and hasn’t read a book in at least 13 years. I couldn’t put it down. This is such a phenomenal book that teaches you the math and strategy around making proper decisions at the poker table. It gives you quick and easy ways to calculate if your decisions at the table are mathematically correct and how using these formulas can help you gain a competitive advantage over your opponent. But this book goes way beyond its “Math”matical title. It teaches you about reading patterns, masking your own patterns, studying your opponents, what to do with certain combinations of hands before and after the flop depending on the situation, etc. I learned so much! I’ve been playing poker for over 25 years, and I run my own 400+ member poker games in the community. But this book taught me so much. In addition to the things I learned to help me against others, I also learned a lot of things that I’m guilty of doing wrong. A must read if you’re serious about improving your game. Otherwise, be prepared to get beat by those who do read it.

I like to think I am good at poker but basically I'm probably average. What I like about this book is that it gives me some tips and tricks that I can put into practice right away -- I actually did use them in some family poker games over the holidays and they worked. Although I'm not new to poker, I am new to learning playing strategies from this book. Over the years, I've found some other good books on the subject, but this one put me in the player's seat and showed me the best ways to get ahead. Much to the dismay of others in my poker group, I've become a far better player who finally knows what she's doing. It seems to me that this guy, Clayton, really knows his stuff and now I know it too!

I read the book in one night. The next night at the tournament of about 120 people I was able to implement some of the information gleaned from the book and won the tournament. $400 win a great return on investment. I was recommended this book by a colleague. I love it too. It is about the initial stages of the computer revolution, yet reads more like a collection of entertaining short stories. It is far from a dry read. Included in the front are short descriptions about people and devices mentioned or interviewed. If you're a software developer this actually explains why IDEs mark errors with red. If you're a gamer, you'll learn about the first video game. (It wasn't Pong). I haven't red the entire thing yet, but it's still a good read. External links give you further details and some are entertaining. The book may be titled hackers, but there isn't anything illegal or even ill-intented. It was about the pursuit for knowledge and efficiency. This is a must for serious software engineers and computer science. If for nothing else then leisurely reading. There is a fair amount of discussion of assembly language, which is seldom covered in even college classes, usually one class for a single assignment or chapter. Not much is explained in detail so the education level to understand the book completely is fairly high. There are a bunch of inside jokes, but I do think that an average college student could understand 90-95% of the book.

I first read this book in the early/mid 1980s when I was a Navy electronic tech. One shipmate had the Texas Instruments computer, another had the Atari 800XL. I got my 800XL shortly after. We were playing games from the companies detailed in this book. It was great reading of the authors of our games, putting details to the names. Learning how the whole "PC Revolution began, and the earlier history of the MIT whizkids and the TMRC. I was just really getting into it in 1984 when the bottom dropped out of the electronic/computer game industry, nearly ending it. Luckily it made a comeback. The games got better as the machines were upgraded and improved. Being on the fringe of hacking myself, I could see the very different approaches of Commodore and Atari management, exactly as detailed in the book. Actually living through this while reading Levi's book mde it much more "real" and appropos to me. I can understand people much later being less impressed, as they don't have the context of these events actually playing out.I look forward to rereading it, and seeing what new info is presented. This book played a huge part in my going into a 24 year IT career after leaving the Navy. But programming now has become a heartless industry compared to how it was twenty-plus years ago. Wish I'd been born earlier, in time to take part in the earlier history of hacking and programming.

The book is funny, informative and impossible to put down! Having grown up through the infancy of personal computers, including nearly a one-year stint as a TRS-80 salesman, I laughed often out loud as I followed the adventures of Greenblatt, Gosper and dozens of others in Levy's tales. No other book I have read gives the genealogy of both hardware and software in their embryonic periods so well as this tome. "Hackers" now has a much friendlier connotation for me than it once did now that I appreciate the openness and positive nature of the Hacker Ethic. The news media have made the hackers out as scum/criminals/bandits/general bad guys - Levy casts them in a much different light.The book is great for its humor and history in the 96th percentile of each category! Buy it and be prepared to laugh and learn!

Hackers by Steven Levy is an excellent and rich book detailing the timeline of computer hackers and the hacker ethic. The book starts with the various exploits of MIT hackers and the model railroad club in the early 1950s working IBM computers such as the 704, and the infamous TX-0. The book travels all the way to the 1980s and the Siera On-Line game company and the death of the open source hacker ethic. The book does an excellent job of personalizing the signature characters of the computer revolution proving the point that excellent hackers aren't necessarily the people who graduated with straight A's from MIT, Harvard, or Stanford. The book seems personal but also extremely informative while inspiring the same creativity that drew the hackers of the 20th century to computers.Hackers also does an excellent job of promoting and almost idealizing the infamous Hacker Ethic developed initially in the 1950s by the first computer hackers. The ethic consists of a focus on open source technology, cooperation, and an intense disapproval of the corporatization of computer software.Overall, Hackers is an excellent book if you enjoy computing history and getting into the nitty gritty of how many of the worlds most popular software innovations came to be.

I have a large collection of books regarding the "computer revolution" and was afraid that this will be overlapping with certain stories. I was wrong. While it slightly touches those anticipated overlapped stories, it mainly deals with the "underdogs" of the revolution, slightly mentioning succesful business entrapeneurs such as Steve Jobbs, Bill Gates, and John Carmack. It overly deals with the true meaning of hackers and their ethic, as their embrace of their philosophy made today's technology as it is. Almost 500 pages long with no pictures, it is written in a style that makes you a part of the past, as you where one of the "hackers" per se. Anyone who owns a computer should read this book to understand the word the media has slung into an incorrect meaning and to find more appreciation for their workstation besides browsing Facebook!

The copy I got was black and white, and not as useful, accordingly. Still, it covered the basics pretty well. I always like studying people who are very limited in their tools, as they always get fascinatingly creative, and parts of this do fit that mold. I give it a full five stars not so much for its absolute accuracy, but rather for its broad analysis in and of a certain historical period. The first few chapters are a rather tedious refutation of Malthusian theory of population growth, and the implicit economic theory behind it. From then on it has all it takes to be considered a classic.The basic idea of common ownership (but not necessarily right to use) to land and other natural resources is deeply rooted in most humans, and is probably a much more clear and straightforward moral ground for taxation than whatever is currently presented by liberal democracies.Add to this the enormous potential of collecting rent (i.e. the value of unimproved land, including its natural resources such as minerals or forests, and also the increased value from its location, e.g. in a city) as taxes and you have a strong foundation for state finances.Henry George explains -sometimes in rather archaic terms, using farmers and farm land as the most frequent example- why such a system would be to great benefit of virtually everyone in society. For instance: Speculation in land would be seriously dampened and useful land would hardly lay idle.His conclusion is the Single Tax. Which is perhaps why the idea died away. Still a great inspiration a century and a half after its first publication. And quite an easy read, considering the dryness of its subject.

One problem with this edition is that the footnotes don't seem to work, and trying to find which is being referenced is next to impossible. There is good reason why land is called REAL estate. An oversimplification is this: Manhattan Island was purchased by European settlers from native Indians in 1626 for $24. In 1996 Manhattan Island's estimated worth was $34,000,000,000. In our economy, land is commonly taxed on the basis of the purchase price, and the difference between the initial purchase price and subsequent sales price is considered to be profit. Full value land taxation, however, says that in this example, if Manhattan Island is taxed based on the purchase price of $24, then it can only be sold for $24. From appearances, the text was badly OCRed from another source, introducing many typos. Worse, the font is much too small and the columns are far too wide, making it very difficult to read. Looks like it was put together by some no-name "publisher" (nowhere identified in the printing; can't say I'm surprised) out to make a quick, fraudulent buck off this out-of-copyright classic.

The quality of the printing could be better done. The content is a classic understanding of early pre-socialist “Christian liberation theology”. It’s a great insight to the workings of how this developed into the 1960’s post Vatican 2 theological justice moment. Worth the read

Fantastic book. Really provides a thoughtful (not academic in the modern sense) discussion for interest rates and how they function. I'm very glad I stumbled across this book several years ago.

As a conservative I bought this book hoping to learn more about the author's opinions regarding the root cause of poverty in the late 1800s. This book is nothing more than a fancy cover over photo copies of the original text from a library. The publisher didn't even bother to create a table of contents, an index of key topics or bump up the original font size from 3 to something readable. The author's writings just rambling on and on. Once in a wild he stumbles upon a good question such as, "What is the meaning of life?", but he just keeps rambling and never tries to answer it. This book represents the unfortunate transition from a great potential to a pile of rubbish.

A must read for anyone wishing to understand where and how America confused happiness and mass consumption/ technological innovation. Too few environmentalists reference George. It seems that his 150 year old ideas are still too radical, or too honest. One of the great works of American philosophy, "poverty and progress" is a blue print for social justice. The printing is the original from 1870's. George had the plates made himself because his publishers did not want to risk the money on the printing plates if the book didn't sell. Let's get this book back in print and give Henry George his proper seat in history as an incredible intellectual with an uncommonly large heart.
