Review

“Honnold blows wide open any conventional understanding of the term ‘comfort zone.’…He engagingly conveys his love of climbing.” - Barbara J. King, NPR“[Honnold] is the foremost practitioner of the dark art of free solo rock climbing―ascending extremely difficult cliffs hundreds, sometimes thousands, of feet tall without ropes or protection hardware of any kind. That is every bit as stupefying as it sounds.” - Wall Street Journal“Honnold here recounts his ascents on some of the world's most dangerous rock walls. You'll come away questioning his sanity for choosing this controversial sport…But it's also impossible not to feel awe.” - People“Honnold has free-soloed the longest, most challenging climbs ever. Most peculiar of all, even to elite rock climbers, Honnold does this without apparent fear, as if falling were not possible.” - Daniel Duane, New York Times Magazine“Honnold is the biggest name in a group of adventure athletes engaging in high-risk live action-sports spectacles that seem to be pulled from the Evel Knievel playbook.” - Grayson Schaffer, Outside“Alex is really the first climber to rise from the margins of this lonely fringe sport to become a kind of celebrity.” - Josh Dean, Men's Health

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

I became interested in Alex Honnold after the 60 minutes story. I never forgot his name, and just got around to ordering this book for my Kindle during an extended medical leave due to surgery . I thoroughly enjoyed his descriptions of the many "rocks" he's climbed. Having never been a climber myself, I was afraid it would be too technical to hold my interest. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was fascinated by his explaining how and why he's chosen to do this with his life. I also enjoyed reading about his various climbing partners and their adventures. I wish I had heard of him before our family visited Yosemite in 2011, as I would have heeded the park stranger's invitation to spend some time in El Cap meadow with a pair of binoculars to watch the climbers.

Very well written and well balanced book, between narrative and Alex's own writing. Incredible stories that will live on forever. I love the lack of ego in this book. Not many people in this world seem to appreciate the world the way Alex does. Everything is just very honest. This is a must read for climbers and non-climbers. It is about being a good person and loving what you do. Although not everyone can have the luxury to live in a van and climb in world's most beautiful rocks, we can take part in paying Mother Nature some extra appreciation and finding a side kick of something we love aside from our jobs.Glad to have people like Alex in the world everyone to look to for inspiration. Good people are awesome.

In my youth I climbed the route Alex went up in 3 days of the hardest climbing I had ever climbed.I spent the whole book nervously reading, it’s been 25 years since I have been in the route but still remember those cruxes. The achievements Alex has made in his career are incredible. To the non-climbers the choices on routes Alex chooses to solo may seem crazy, to those of us who have climbed seriously know how insanely bold those decisions are. The only place I have ever experienced complete concentration with no outside influences was leading a pitch. I could relate to Alex’s descriptions and emotional battles. He is in a class of his own, I hope to never open a paper to find out we have lost this person.

I was surprised after reading Alone On The Wall to discover that David Roberts is a climber, because when I was reading this book, it really seemed like he didn't "get it". It didn't seem like Roberts really understood or was on board with what Honnold was and is doing--his lifestyle, his climbing, and yes, his free soloing. Maybe it was because he didn't insert his own opinion into things--a lot of Roberts' writing is just summarizing interviews with other people. But there's a ton of people out there who either don't climb or climb more conservatively who have opinions about Honnold, and if I wanted to hear that, I'd read any of the hundreds of articles about Honnold on the internet. This book was a chance to hear from Honnold and find out what he thinks, and instead Roberts' writing is about what everyone else thinks--I just don't care about that. For the parts of the book which were actually written by Honnold--a lot of what he wrote is just responding to what other people say, which yields some insights, but I'd much rather have read what Honnold wanted to say. The problem here maybe is that Honnold doesn't want to say anything--he'd rather be out climbing. Which is great--that's how he became the climber who inspires me. But it doesn't make for a great book.I'll also point out that this book was published two years ago as of this review, and was probably mostly written in the year before that. In that time, I've seen Honnold mature a lot--his interviews on TV and podcasts show a person who has had a lot of emotional and mental growth over the last few years. The Honnold who wrote passages in Alone On The Wall is not the Honnold we know today--the one who wrote this is a bit immature, a bit distracted. I get the feeling that Honnold was pressured to write this book a bit before he was really ready to be writing a book--it's a bit weird to write your story before it's over. I really hope this isn't the last book we see from Honnold, because I think if he were to write a book now or later in his life, it would be a lot better.Contrast this with The Push by Tommy Caldwell. There's a book written by an older climber who knew what he wanted to write. At the surface level, it turns out to be a book that's much less about climbing, but it's far more vulnerable and insightful, and gives readers a much better understanding of what motivated Caldwell to become one of the best climbers in the world.

Was absolutely captivated. Especially by the first 3 or 4 chapters which explain the Video shoots of Alex free-solo climbing and how he became a modern legend. Very interesting as he explains what he's thinking and his mental preparation for free soloing. Also how he approaches his climbs and general outlook on life and risk-taking. If you watch his videos on YouTube, you'll buy and read the book. What he can do on the face of sheer mountain faces is unbelievable and has to be seen to be believed.

Review

ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards, Honorable Mention, Philosophy (2006)Publishers Weekly "Writing in a sophisticated, academic style — highlighting the philosophical and theological writings of Voltaire, Aquinas, Dostoyevsky, and Calvin — Hart asks Christians to allow themselves to be moved and horrified by violence, natural or human-made, and, at the same time, to acknowledge that God can and someday will bring about the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. It's an eloquent and persuasive stance."The Christian Science Monitor "The Doors of the Sea is timely, eloquent, and unfashionable. Its arguments are missing from public debate — perhaps with tragic results."The Christian Century "A moving inquiry into the question of evil, one likely to be a classic. Hart defends the ancient Christian descriptions of evil as nonbeing and of God as immutable, saying that they offer the most theologically coherent and existentially satisfactory account of evil."

Interesting idea. David B. Hart attempts to answer the question of where God was during natural disasters such as the Indonesian tsunami in 2004. He is responding mostly to theodicy (the belief that evil and suffering are part of God's divine plan) and Calvinist strains of Christianity (the doctrine of predestination).Hart's response is : “The Christian should see two realities at once, one world (as it were) within another:one the world as we all know it, in all its beauty and terror, grandeur and dreariness, delight and anguish; and the other world in its first and ultimate truth, not simply “nature” but “creation,” an endless sea of glory, radiant with the beauty of God in every part, innocent of all violence” (60).Evil is not a creation of God, but is the privation of goodness (like St. Augustine). Suffering and evil exist because we have free will and we have chosen to sin and thus, let sin into the world. The world was once perfect and pure (Pre Fall), and once we sinned, we have physically altered the world in a way that makes it susceptible to tragedy, misery, and evil. A question we can ask in response is how exactly was the world altered after the Fall? Did the laws of gravity or motion change? Has the genetic makeup of human beings been altered as well?Overall, I thought this approach was interesting, but I believe it be inadequate for a number of reasons.

Other reviews and blurbs have eloquently set out the project of this wonderful book. All I can hope to add is to ask anyone who has ever asked those big questions about suffering and meaning and God's will to read this book ... and hopefully be inspired, hopefully see a glimpse of what the answer may be. It also reminds us most timeously to refrain from the glib and banal platitude when suffering strikes.A short little book that packs the theological punch of a 500 page masterpiece. I will return to this often.

DBH once again brings a masterful work to the post-modern conversation. There is a host of unsatisfying answers to the problem of evil, but this dismantles them and gives a confident and humble answer that does not disappoint or otherwise fall short. There is no equal in my mind.

I don't know if I've ever read a more compelling and beautiful explanation of theodicy ever, and it is a book that I will need to ponder again and again to mine all the wealth of wisdom found in it!

This book seemed to be written in a bit of a rush in response to the tragedy. As such it's readable, as Hart always is, but doesn't answer the question it asks in the title with any great depth.

This is an important book to read on the subject of evil. The last chapter is a particularly useful and passionate polemic against faulty systems of Christian thought. It is not an easy read though due to the authors penchant for using difficult and obscure words!

The book was not the easiest to read, but his point well made. A compelling argument for the problem of evil. Good historical evidence given by others for and against his view. Would recommend to others, helpful to get a well rounded view in response to the problem of evil. Best point made when he wrote how we should respond to people suffering what we really believe about God.

David Bentley Hart is unquestionably one of the most brilliant theological and philosophical minds in America today. This is a fine introduction into his thought through the medium of an important topic. The purpose for writing this book was to expand the thoughts of a NY Times article that Hart was asked by a friend to write following the tragedy of the 2004 Christmas Tsunami. The monstrous event was followed by hasty responses from people of various philosophical and religious traditions. From one perspective, some atheists wrote that this was clear evidence that God does not exist, as though the multitudes of religious believers worldwide had never considered the gravity of evil in the world, and the implications for such a reality on their belief. From another perspective, some theologians were claiming that God predestined such a catastrophe and that the piles of infant and children bodies were somehow a testimony to God's sovereignty and glory. In light of these seemingly polar opposite arguments (despite their similar theological view of god), Hart responds by expounding on the Christian intellectual tradition against these two opposing views. Hart clearly reserves his greatest criticism for those theologians who distort the Christian tradition to portray God as not subversively working against such tragedy, but willing and using such tragedies.Hart discusses Voltaire's response to the Lisbon earthquake (a similarly tragic event), positioning it within its historical context, highlighting Voltaire's disdain for the typical theological answers offered to him by those who had a heightened sense of theological optimism and claimed that every evil had a good purpose. Hart then discusses how the god who wills and has a purpose in such tragedies must also be rejected, if not through denying his existence, at least in by denying him allegiance. Hart builds this argument through the thought of Fyodor Dostoevsky (particularly through the words of Ivan Karamazov in The Brothers Karamazov). Few would disagree that the words of Ivan Karamazov present the problem of evil as well as anyone before or since. I will leave for you to read how Hart shows that such an argument by Ivan Karamazov is inherently Christian at its core whether Ivan would admit it or not.In the second section on Divine Victory, Hart is concerned to argue that God is free of blame for natural evil, while not diminishing the anger that every Christian should feel at such an event. Hart, focusing on the traditions of Maximus the Confessor, Isaac the Syrian and Thomas Aquinas, does an outstanding job of showing how the Christian intellectual tradition stands together with those who are angered and in deep pain concerning such events. The book is short, although some have complained that the language makes it too dense to read despite its brevity. I would disagree, and whereas I accept that reading Hart may require keeping a dictionary at hand, such a challenge should not dissuade the reader from finishing the work and pondering his argument.Unfortunately, the brevity of this work also means that not all questions about the theological aspects of Hart's argument can be resolved. As such, I would suggest the theological reader also read Hart's The Beauty Of The Infinite: The Aesthetics Of Christian Truth.I would also suggest that the reader have a basic understanding of philosophy and theology before reading the book. The terminology may be unfamiliar to some who are not familiar with these fields and thus they would find the reading more difficult than it is intended to be. This would not diminish my willingness to suggest the book to those thinking through this issue. Few authors have made such a compelling case in such a succinct and beautiful manner.

ADVENTURE CATS IS SO COOL! I have a cat that *maybe likes the outdoors. This book gives me the skills and materials I need in order to see exactly what he's capable of! It's a totally handy and useful book and the pictures in it-- OMG, BEAUTIFUL! It's amazing to see real cats on top of mountains. This is probably the best handbook for cats I've seen. And it's not only about taking your cats outside, there are tips for travel (whether in car or airplane) and even just how to take them for walks in your yard. SUPER RECOMMEND for any cat lover in your life! If they don't want to put this book into action, they'll still love the inspiring stories and super cute kitty pics!

A fantastic book filled with inspiring stories and pictures of adventurous cats and their owners; it breaks down many mainstream ideas and stereotypes about cats that might keep them from being adopted. This book also has great tutorials and advice for cat lovers/owners regarding how to leash train their cats, how to hike with them safely, and much more. Not just for outdoorsy types--this book celebrates just how pawsome cats can be!

What a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn how to safely take their kitties outdoors! Whether you're taking your cat on a walk around your neighborhood or hiking several miles up a mountain, it's written to be accessible for all aspiring adventure cats & their people. I especially loved reading all the stories about adventure cats from around the world — so inspiring! The photos/design of the book are also exceptional. They really pull you in and make you want to keep reading.

This is such a fun book! Living in Colorado, I have seen quite a few cats on hiking trails and nature parks. Wanting to learn more, I found the Adventure Cats website and eventually this wonderful book! The website does a great job providing a general overview of getting your cat used to adventures, but the book really goes above and beyond if you are interested in actually introducing your own cat to the outdoors. I love the instructional chapters interspersed with the "cat tales" of real-life cats, and I am hopeful that I will have an adventure cat of my own someday. This book would make a great gift for some of my cat-loving friends as well.

Not only is this book a brilliant idea, but it really does include all of the information you need to safely/responsibly venture outside with your cat. I loved the inspiring stories of the Adventure Cats that do all sorts of things -- some of them were so surprising! As a "cat lady," I appreciate that this book is busting stereotypes and showing the world that cats really can be wonderful companions -- at home and outdoors. I truly hope it inspires other people to try to think outside of the house when it comes to enriching activities for their feline friends!

Have you spent any time at all googling how to travel with your cat? Stop now, and buy this first. All the basics and then some. Answered more questions than I even knew I had! From simple travel to the vet, to immersing your cat in the wilderness--there's so much to learn. It's super easy to read, and is a sturdy, quality-made book. Only good things to say!!!

Book was cute. Thought it would be slightly more informative rather than stories about cats that travel, although there ARE some good tips here and there. I liked the kitty first aid list for traveling with your cat. Our lil kitty travels and goes out on a leash to walk and potty because we live in the city near a couple main roads. We take her on trips and if its safe she is allowed to run free. She is very smart and listens better than most dogs. More training techniqe and travel idea’s would improve this book. I did enjoy the bright photo illustrations as did my daughter and the stories about other cats who travel are fun to read to her. She is 7.

I'm not even a cat fan, but a friend showed this to me and I fell in love with not just the gorgeous pictures, but the stories of adventure, connection, and healing brought about via furry friends. With the hubs being a feline kind of man, I bought it as a gift and we've both enjoyed reading it tremendously. I can't believe that Ms. Moss has almost--ALMOST--convinced me to get a cat! It truly is a beautiful book.
