I ordered this book, Get What's Yours by Laurence J. Kotlikoff, to help me prepare for my next birthday, when I will turn 65 and will need to decide whether to file for Social Security or wait for a while. I am already retired and have been for a little while, but am by any means wealthy. Wish I were then I would not even bother with Social Security and not drain the system from use by those more in need of the help in their later years. I will revisit this review if it really helps me or not and make necessary changes, based on whether this work is worth it or not. I like what I have read so far and feel it is worth the money to me and could help many others who could use some guidance in their decisions concerning their retirement choices.

Given the choice of learning 3000 pages of Social Security law and tens of thousands of regulations, or having two front teeth pulled without anesthetic, most would choose the latter, if only because it's over quicker. Get What's Yours understands this. It presents the basic background, basic facts, basic tips, and even the basic SSA form, in an environment of real scenarios. The asides are cheerful or acidic, as appropriate, and it mitigates the confusion by constantly hammering at the basics. At first I thought it annoying, but slowing down, I realized I needed to see it all again, in action, to help it sink in. It also means you can go right to the section that concerns you, because the foundation points will be there (again). This book is necessary for three reasons: Social Security is not intuitive, and sometimes makes no sense at all. Two, Americans act against their best interests, leaving all kinds of money on the table. Three, there is usually a "however" with Social Security rules.Worse, Social Security is now up to three million requests every week, but Congress keeps cutting back budget, staff, hours and whole offices. Combine that with the complexity factor, and the authors conclude you cannot trust what Social Security advises. Great. The way we go after Social Security says two things: Americans are poorer than they pretend, and they don't know how much they're giving up. Only about 3% wait until age 70 to claim, where the figures show a dramatic, peak difference (76%) over claims at 62, when the biggest group files - for the least amount offered. As an aside, there is an annual survey that always says the same thing: nearly 50% of Americans couldn't raise an emergency $2500 in 30 days, not from savings or even from friends and family. Nearly half of Americans simply cannot postpone Social Security. The most important tip is to wait until 70 before taking benefits. The next most important tip is to register at 66, but at the same time suspend benefits until 70. This not only allows your rate to grow 8% a year for four years, it also allows your spouse to claim spousal benefits (half of yours) when s/he reaches 66 and let her/his own benefits continue to grow until age 70. There are a lot of ifs ands and buts, so the book becomes a tremendous resource. The answers are clear and cogent. As a consultant who works in different environments all the time, I developed a saying that I could play by anybody's rules, as long as I knew what they were. Get What's Yours tells you what they are.David Wineberg

I really needed the information in this book. Although I tell myself I didn't need it repeated four or five times over, I probably did. Each time I read a familiarly phrased core principle, I had a more thorough understanding. The authors apologize for the repetitiveness here, but repeat themselves they do. Perhaps they're trying to make sure those of us who have historically made bad financial decisions get the Social Security choices right. (And that is the main reason I am reading this book now, at this point in my life, as a 50-something. Having failed to save any money, I can at least gain a good understanding of the benefits of my fall-back retirement plan which is Social Security alone, without embellishment.) So be prepared for some not-so-subliminal behavior modification efforts tucked into these pages. Given the numbers of us who act impulsively, according to the authors' statistics, perhaps we do need to be whacked with this information repeatedly and hard. This book is also for people who think they know everything there is to know about Social Security choices. The authors spend a great deal of time debunking lovingly held misconceptions that could cost you a lot of money. They also point out that the standard advice handed out by Social Security workers on the phone and online is usually wrong and there is no liability on their part for being wrong and there's no recourse on your part (short of paying back the benefit) if you get it wrong because of Social Security's own advice. The authors also point out that we all think we're smarter than we are. So you can drop this tendency into your next insufferably boring lunchtime conversation with your much dumber colleagues -- it's called 'illusory superiority.' Makes you sound smart when you say it, doesn't it?Illusory superiority is especially acute for all those would-be geniuses who think they'll take Social Security early and invest in the stock market to beat the system. Those are the really dumb folks. This book explains, two or three times, why this is so.The book is conversational, but the subject matter is dense. Only once did this tendency to try and be accessible cause confusion. This sentence stumped me momentarily: "You've been divorced for 2 or more years, or your ex has filed for their retirement benefit." Well, we would say this in conversation without a problem, but the writer meant to say that my "ex has filed for his retirement benefit." Make no mistake, though. I learned that this is a carefully edited book and a minor problem like noun/pronoun agreement is practically non-existent. The authors are serious people, trying to make a bureaucratic behemoth like the SSA understandable to those of us who would rather not know. Women, especially, will benefit from the information in this book and, if your husband buys it and reads it, you should read it, too. Best to check that the decisions made by one spouse will ultimately benefit both. If that isn't possible, then there's a conversation that needs to take place. The bottom line is that this book is probably more than necessary. It's essential to getting the Social Security choice -- sometimes choices -- right and at the right time. With budget cuts for staff, we are never going to get the best advice from the phone people employed by Social Security. You need to find out what's best for you. You will also learn where the best calculators are (AARP has one, the authors have one), when not to get married, why it probably won't matter if you get divorced after 10 years as long as you don't remarry too soon, how not to unwittingly cause Social Security to "deem" that you have asked for two benefits at once when you really only intended to tap into one.Learning the lessons in this book and making notes that can be checked as each important birthday approaches gave me a headache. But, for once, I didn't put it off too long. And we have to figure this stuff out sometime; we have to exercise a little impulse control; and, we're dumber than we look. I'm off to grab some Tylenol. And my notes.

Since I am approaching FRA, I ordered this book hoping to learn something I don't know. But all it does is provide information that in my opinion is common knowledge, i.e. wait as long as possible to collect preferably until 70 to get the maximum benefit. Am I missing something? Is there some kind of SS secret that I've missed? UPDATE 07/13/15: Since I have finally finished the book, I summarize the advice in a couple of sentences: 1) if you cannot collect on your spouse's benefits wait till 70 if possible. 2) if you can, collect on your spouse's benefits upon reaching FRA and wait till 70 to collect on your own benefits. You would get the maximum benefits if you do these two things. THAT'S IT IN A NUTSHELL. No need to buy the book. UPDATE 10/05/2016 - I just finished reading 6 Million Dollar Retiree by Arthur V. Prosper. It has a chart of when you should collect based on your marital status, etc. and it has much better information too for retirement planning.

I haven't finished this book yet, but it's shaping up to be a really good read. Freya's recounting of her travels through Yemen are providing me with some keen insights into Arab culture. The society seems to be conservative and isolated from the rest of the world.

I had never heard of Freya Stark when I purchased this, but it was a great book. I had to adjust to the pace, because it really is an old fashioned account of the pace and culture of travel in the 30s, but it's a wonderful insider's account of passing through a Muslim society before cultures were all "opened up" to one another. When you get into it, it's easy to appreciate the details that are included and the slower pace, and pulls the reader back to a time when people appreciated simple things and took the most care with such pastimes as handwritten letters and travel journals. The focus is on the personalities and day to day activities of the travelers and Ms. Stark's ingenuity and finesse in navigating the social challenges of being a British woman abroad, alone, before that was expected. Very interesting.

Writing style is hard to read there is a lot of information the reader do not care about as long tiredsome description of landscape. By the time you get to some kind of a story you already tired.

This is a fascinating book. A must read for anyone who enjoys travel writing, is interested in the history of the Middle East, or just wants to read about some-one who thumbed her nose at the "establishment"! Well written too.

the book arrived on time, in great condition. i recommend the seller and the author. freya stark traveled foreign lands before it was a popular thing to do. she documents her journey with incredible insight.

Thank you

don't like her style of writting

A travel memoir written in the late 1930s - and 1000 years ago. It's a beautifully written, gentle book of a harsh land and its tribal peoples. Stark, is both poet and pragmatist. More musings and personal interactions than places and things, the book is a pleasure to read and savor. I wonder if the history of the Middle East wouldn't be improved had the colonial powers been guided by her sympathetic but unblinking understanding of Arab village and bedouin cultures.

#821,000 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a basic book on study skills. This book is aimed at the advanced high school or college audience. It assumes the student is engaged and motivated. It is somewhat dated and did not cover some of the 'modern' challenges that a student might face such as various issues or needs in light of computers and other digital devices.I attempted to adapt this book to remedial ninth grade students with little success. It is written for the advanced student so please know this will not be an appropriate pick for most middle school or 'struggling' high school students. This book would not be a helpful book if your student has ADHD or learning disabilities. I only rated it three of five stars because my class did not find it helpful, but you would if you are a bit more advanced than my particular students were.

I love rereading this book when I feel that I need to get back to the basics. It always adds motivation for me to stick to a schedule and slowly and methodically chip away at my studies. Best of all, it sticks to the point of giving the student everything they need to be successful.

This was great to find. It is an incredible book and I'm glad they've taken it to re-publish. Thank you! There are some key things I underlined in the 2nd edition from 1940/50 that were chosen in this edition, but I'm very glad it was re-published for me to pass along to college students I know.

When the time comes, I'll probably send my daughter off to college with Strunk and White's Elements of Style and this book. Although How to Study lacks the style and wit of the Elements of Style, it shares its brevity and concentration on the fundamentals of its topic. The book is a revised version of an old study guide available to freshmen at the School of Business in the University of Chicago, and it covers an enormous amount of ground in its 55 pages. As advertised, the advice is gimmick free, stressing the need for the student's motivation, which should come from some larger goal for the student's life.Despite its common sense approach, How to Study offers nuggets of solid information and tips in each chapter, such as writing down distractions before studying to free them from your mind, the proper uses of memorization, and test-taking strategies. There are no miracles in this book, only basic information on how to go about studying, getting the most out of reading material, listening to a lecture, studying for an exam, and a constant insistence on active learning, all presented in a brief, no-nonsense manner. There are few books that offer this much good information for this price.

This book is a must read for serious students of high school and college. It starts from the study motive to the benefit of cramming. Much insight is included in a few pages. However, it is not totally suitable for the self-learner. Something could be added: Making the whole study plan, choosing what to study, and designing the strategy to carry out the plan. If you are a self-learner, you should notice this point.

How March Became Madness: How the NCAA Tournament Became the Greatest Sporting Event in America, by Eddie Einhorn

From Booklist

If you ask the bookmakers in Vegas, they'll agree: March Madness--the NCAA basketball tournament--is the "greatest sporting event in America." But it's not just the betting that has won our hearts, it's the sport itself. Einhorn--currently vice-chairman of the Chicago White Sox--toots his horn a bit here in that he credits his own "revolutionary" idea of broadcasting college basketball games as being the event that changed the NCAA tournament for good. Perhaps he is right, because players and coaches went from being mere students and college staff to celebrities as the tournament grew in popularity. Drawing on interviews with nearly 50 college basketball greats--both players and coaches--Einhorn and Rapoport (the latter a former Chicago Sun-Times columnist) provide a big-picture history of the tournament that nicely complements John Feinstein's more intimate, from-the-floor account, A March to Madness (1998), and the lavishly illustrated history March Madness (also from Triumph Books). From the Inside Flap

Before college basketball became the multi-billion-dollar enterprise that culminates each year in the frenzied excitement of March Madness, it was a game of small gyms, tiny budgets, pioneering coaches, and university and network officials who were deeply suspicious of the intrusion of television into their fiefdom. All this was about to change as a young TV executive named Eddie Einhorn traveled the nation, selling his revolutionary idea of broadcasting college basketball games. Einhorn built his TV network team by team, conference by conference, and station by station until eventually he found himself beating the major networks, stealing their audiences, and proving to skeptics that the game was about to explode on the national consciousness. Einhorn achieved his greatest success with the first primetime telecast of a college basketball game, the historic contest between Houston and UCLA in the Astrodome in 1968. How March Became Madness is the fascinating account of how that telecast and its aftermath laid the foundation for what became one of the greatest sporting events in America. ItÂ’s an account told through the voices of a veritable WhoÂ’s Who of great coaches, players, and announcers, including John Wooden, Bob Knight, Mike Krzyzewski, Guy Lewis, Joe B. Hall, Denny Crum, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Billy Packer, and Dick Vitale. Through their and other voices, Einhorn tells the fascinating and often hilarious story of how March Madness became the incredible phenomenon we know today.

Great book by the founder of the NCAA tournament. Well written and explains how it all came about.

Eddie Einhorn's vision made the popularity of college basketball expand geometrically. This is a must read for any serious college basketball fan.

Fans of college basketball will enjoy the information and stories provided in this book. The book is a collection of interviews, set forth in story format, in which the author met and interviewed with a number of significant figures in college basketball, including coaches, media, and players. There are many great stories here, and the book is divided up into different stories on the different personalities, so it makes for an accessible read. You can pick up the book, read one article, then put it down. I found the stories by the coaches to be among the most entertaining: Coach K, Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, Dean Smith, Guy Lewis and others all provide insightful stories. Also, the book puts college basketball in its historical context, with a focus on the first televised basketball game, UCLA vs. Houston, played in the Astrodome. Overall a very informative and entertaining book, I would strongly recommend it to any college basketball fan.

You can't put this book down. Interview after interview, you are amazed at the stories behind each legend. The best part is that this is basically a compliation of mini-autobiographies, but narrated as a conversation between good friends. The book starts with an interview with Rey Meyer - it reminds you how lucky the author was to have interviewed him before his passing away. You are also amazed at the hard work, passion and perseverance of Eddie Einhorn. If you love basketball (or even just "like" sports), this is the book for you.

The book itself is really intriguing and interesting, but when you combine the DVD with the book you really get to see what you have been reading about. It is really neat and I totally suggest this book to anyone.

This promises to be THE book on the NCAA college basketball tournament - all the stats, matchups, insights and interviews we've been craving since March Madness became 'The Spring Superbowl.'
