I read this book when it first came out and then recently repurchased for a friend who was heading to Kilimanjaro. It's a well-written, suspenseful account of a treacherous climb gone wrong and a climbing partner who broke the most sacred rule of the mountain. It's as much about the human spirit as it is about conquering the Breach wall. One unforgettable incident is where a nurse turns down the flow of antibiotics and fluids to the patient to a trickle so she won't have to be bothered to change the bags so often.Rob Taylor now runs a venerable summer camp in the Boston suburbs.

I met Rob Taylor in Elementary school in the 1980's. He came to our school, showed slides, and gave a presentation about his time on "Kili." I was able to get an autographed and numbered copy of this book, and these 30 years later, the book is still with me.This story is a remarkable journey of a man, his climbing partner, and the unthinkable happening in the cold and ice. Rob falls, fractures his leg, and comes close to death.This book is the story of how he survived.This book inspires me every time I read it, and I have read it many, many times over the years. A true journey of the human spirit and the will to survive.

Couldn't put it down once I started. Very good and a gripping tale.

Very compelling and well written story. Some have debunked the author's point of view but it was a nifty story. I had read it years ago and bought it to reread because of its intensity.

This is on one of the best cimbing books I have ever read. I highly recomend it to anyone who is intereting in an adventure.

Taylor is not only a gifted alpinist, but a gifted writer. The book eloquently draws the reader into the harrowing physical and mental journey to Africa and up and down The Breach Wall.The previous reviewer has such a twisted perspective that it leads one to wonder whether he's suffering from altitude sickness after having read The Breach. He obviously missed the whole point of the book and grossly misunderstood the person. Rob Taylor is what I would characterize as a "soul alpinist." He obviously doesn't climb for self-aggrandizement, he climbs to feed his soul. It was immediately apparent to me that Taylor wrote this book, not to "become famous" or for anyone but himself. The book is an introspectual journey as a critical step in the author's healing process. Rob is a renowned, but not famous climber, and one gets the impression he'd have it no other way.Henry Barber, Taylor's climbing partner, was a daring, fantastic climber, but he wouldn't have achieved the same degree of fame if he hadn't made it his first priority to have the press alerted and cameras rolling when he planned his ascents. The previous reviewers suggestion that Taylor played 2nd fiddle to Barber reveals a complete ignorance of the very different characters, skill-sets and goals of these two climbers.In "The Breach," Taylor laments, but NEVER complains at all about the fact that Barber abandons him, critically wounded and desperately in need of support, so as not to miss a promotional event back in the U.S. He was obviously hurt by that. Who wouldn't be??? On the contrary, Taylor thanks Barber profusely for getting him safely off the Breach wall even though Barber doesn't return with the rescue party to see Taylor safely out of the jungle. It's worthy of note that Taylor minimizes description of his own suffering in describing that horrific descent in the book.The book is a real gift, not only as an insight into the inner strength that we can all draw upon in our most critical hours, but also in the artful way it combines adventure and psychology with anthropological and cultural musings to create a thoroughly deep and satisfying meal of a read.

I'm buying this book. The story of Rob Taylor and his parter Harley was compelling. You're probably thinking 'she hasn't even read the book.' Rob Taylor came to my school today. He spent and hour and a half telling us his fascinating story all about his climb up Kilamanjaro and it's tragic ending. Though all that Rob went through with Harley, he still blames himself for the horrific accident. His poor judge of character came back to haunt him later in the climb up this monstrous mountain. He made some decisions that could've been a lot better, but all of us are human. I haven't read the book yet, but I think it'll be interesting to know if Rob wrote about how Harley ended up. I am only in middle school, so yes the majority of my grade laughed, but I think all of the greed and selfishness that he showed Rob up on the mountain is still kicking to this day. When you get someone's story verbally, it tends to be more exciting, especially with someone like Rob Taylor. His expressions and tone of voice as he went through the story that started at the base of the mountain in 120 degree weather to negative 30 at the summit were entertaining. His expressions changed, and even if you were deaf, you would've been able to read the story through his eyes. I'm hoping the book will be as fascinating as the real person...especially when I've seen the scars.

I have read the breach a couple of times cover to cover and also ready passages of it in the mornings while (well you know :) as it helps the time pass by ... I've done a little trad climbing - enough to appreciate the story from the depth of how important is the partnership and how climbers literally entrust their lives in each others hands ...To me Harvey seemed the total nightmare climbing partner, breaking down Rob emotionally at just about every chance he got. What a jerk. It was a good thrilling read and with a little creative license and phenomenal scenes of Africa would make a great movie.

this is a great book! I'm chinese american- so korean ingredients are similar to ingredients i'm used to- but at the same time completely different! the ingredient list with pictures in the beginning of the book- greatly helped me in the korean grocery store. ie my best friends mom always had these big bags with a picture of a raw steak on the front. everytime i walked through their pantry- i thought- "man they must need to tenderize a lot of meat." It turns out the "meat tenderizer" is actually beef soup base! And it's REALLY good soup base for those who like to cheat with food prep! i also liked the fact that it had photos of the different kinds of dried seaweed used- because in korean and japanese grocery stores- the seaweed section can make your head spin with all the different choices you have! i really liked the recipe for chapchae- most of the other korean cookbooks have meat strips or ground meat in them. this one was simple- and if you keep a well stocked pantry you can make this whenever you want! I like to add julienned dried black mushrooms to the recipe as well. the spicy tofu stew with clams is so completely easy to make- and honestly- i leave out the clams and fresh shrimp- and it's still wonderful without! I do like to throw large pink dried shrimp with their heads on- into the soup- primarily because it adds flavor- and because there's a korean restaurant that does the same. The cooking tips that are found throughout the book are priceless. like throwing in dried anchovies if you don't have anchovy stock. I never knew what to do with those things- and now i do. and despite they're smell and appearance they add wonderful flavor to soups. if you have a korean market nearby and you're too lazy to actually cook- i would recommend getting a few bags of the different types of dried soup stock powders. in the same section they should also have these yellow boxes of freeze dried soup. there's no english- except- what type of soup it is- i personally like the pollack soup and the beef and vegetable soup. (and what you see in the picture is actually what is in the box!) one box with 2 cups of water- throw in half a container of soft tofu, some dried shrimp and a dried anchovy and some hot sesame oil and you've got yourself instant goodness. this book really helped me experiment with korean ingredients. (ie putting a tablespoon of the beef soup base powder in the above soup mix adds flavor and is really good) i've even expanded my pantry to include fernbracken. A little scary looking dried and in the package- but i'm sure it's going to be wonderful! i absolutely love this book and the entire wei-chuan series.

This book was supposed to be a present for someone learning Korean. Imagine my surprise, when the "lucky" recipient looked at it, puzzled, and said "Thanks... but it's in Chinese!"So. The book has a nice feel to it, beautiful pictures, and clear instructions. And it's bilingual. The problem is, it's called "Korean edition", with a sticker stating the same, but it's bilingual in English/Chinese.I have contacted the Amazon 4 times, spoke to 4 different people, trying to get an answer to a simple question - was I accidentally sent a wrong book, or this book is, in fact, only bilingual in English/Chinese despite it's name. No luck. Finally, a rep contacted one of the sellers, so now I am waiting for a call-back from a seller. Maybe they know the answer to a riddle, why something in Chinese language is called "Korean edition"...Bottom line: for those of you, who are looking for a nice recipe book, and read either English or Chinese - this is a nice addition to your recipe library, worth the 4 stars I gave in this review. For those who are actually looking for a bilingual English/Korean book, like I was - keep looking.

I have to admit, I've only made two dishes out of this book: the ginseng chicken soup (fantastic) and the chap che (also great). I'm not sure why I end up using Quick & Easy Korean Cooking for Everyone (Quick & Easy Cookbooks Series) a lot more than this book. Thumbing through it, this one has a much more thorough collection of sauces and dips, so it's a great reference, but the recipes tend to be a little more involved. Maybe it's how formal the pictures look in comparison to the Quick & Easy book, I'm not sure. Either way, between these two books I feel that I have a relatively good go-to collection of fairly authentic Korean recipes. I would recommend it, just not as a complete stand-alone.

I have to say that this is one of the easiest to follow Korean cookbooks out there. And for the reader who reads Korean, and was disappointed that it wasn't Korean, bear in mind that this book was written by owners of the Woo Lae Oak restaurant. And the publishers originally translated this book for Chinese readers who are interested in making Korean food at home. And there are many people who are interested in international foods, and English translations were added. These are great recipes, with pictures showing the different steps. I highly recommend this book as a beginner / intermediate Korean cookbook.

This may be my favorite Wei-Chuan Publishing book yet. As someone else said, sometimes the flavour is a bit weak, but I make notes and fix the recipes according to my palate. I enjoy the various flavour combinations given in this book- flavours I've tried to recreate on my own before finding this book, and never quite succeeding. I especially like the wilted beansprout 'salad' using salt, sugar, a hint of sesame oil, and other oil, boiling, etc. ...This is a great book.

Bought this book, knowing the quality of Wei Chuan's cookbooks. I own about a dozen Wei Chuan's books. Book has pictures and many recipes. Recipes in this one seem just as easy to follow as those in my other books.

Glad I was able to find book I lost during move, and used version which saved money, always a good thing.

Great book of references to figure out the best recipes.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, I'm very glad that Chris finally wrote it - I've been waiting for this book for many years. On the other, like many here, I'm disappointed by the pizza dough recipe. This really doesn't look like what he uses in the pizzeria. He offers only a single, straight dough recipe with a 3-5 hour rise. I tried this and found the crust a bit bland. I didn't expect the holy grail of dough recipes, but the recipe is very basic. You can find better pizza doughs in books such as The Pizza Bible and Tartine.However, there is a LOT of gold in this book. First off, Chris meticulously explains his pizza sauce - great! He goes over his 6 signature pizzas with detailed instructions - awesome. His salad dressings are excellent - I have tried the balsamic and red wine vinegar ones so far. His meatball recipe is killer!So my recommendation is - buy this book if you'd like to learn Chris' philosophy, his favorite recipes and his favorite pizza toppings. Know that the dough recipe in the book isn't that great and expect to alter it or swap it out for another. His flavor combinations will still be very enjoyable and can add to your repertoire.

I had never heard of Chris Bianco until I read Peter Reinhart's American Pie, My Search for the Perfect Pizza. Peter waxed poetic about Pizza Rosa (pistachio pizza ) and called Bianco's pizzaria one of the best in America. So when I saw Chris Bianco had written a cookbook, I had to have it. Yes, there are only a few pizza recipes in the book however he spends some time on small plates which is unusual and the desserts are not overly sweet. He weaves in pictures and stories from his parents and grandparents which I found similar to my own heritage and can so appreciate that the knowledge hand down is valuable and precious. I see some of the reviewers don't like his pizza dough. I myself am a devote of Peter Reinhart's Neopolitan crust recipe and have not tried Chris's dough. But how many people would make a pizza with pistachios and a little red onion - it is delicious. For those without a pizza oven, Chris covers alternatives and encourages experimentation with all his recipes. Lastly, he has a recipe in here for a flat crepe/pancake made out of chickpea flour and sage leaves. I made it in my pizza oven and loved it.

Expectations were for some nuggets of wisdom on pizza making - primarily much more on dough. There's really nothing in the pizza section that is new and not available elsewhere; seems a bit "phoned-in." There are a few other recipes that look interesting, and I'll give some of them a try, but overall I expected much more from this one.

Chris Bianco makes pizza pie making available to everyone. I love the way he adds his special touch with a family memory and a spark of humor. His "Wise Guy" pizza was super fun to make and got rave reviews! I can't wait to get in there and try my hand at another family favorite. The recipes are easy to follow and every delightful photo inspires me.Thanks to "Bianco" I overcame my fear at making my own homemade pizza pies!

Chris Bianco is a GD hero. He is one of the most authentic chefs in this country of great chefs and he has single handedly set the bar of excellence in Phoenix. His food is pure to its core. Those who may say "not a lot of pizza in a pizza book.." must have skipped over the beautiful narrative that tells the story of Pizzeria Bianco, the dedication to the ingredients, and the people that produce, farm, and grow them; they are the real stars in this book. If you're looking for a bunch of mumbo jumbo to pile on top of pizza crust, jump on Pinterest.. I'm sure there's plenty of crap there for you.Chris, beautiful book and thank you.

Somewhat disappointing in that his language is sometimes unnecessarily coarse and his dough recipe is by volume and not by weight - not what I had expected - just OK. There are much better pizza books available.

love it! Great tips, and recipe for a nice dough. I value this along with my other pizza cookbooks, like the Elements of Pizza , Jim Leahy's Pizza, and a book from the Roman chef, Bonci. So many great insights and help in mastering a great pizza. Which is not as easy as one thinks! it is the dough!!! Also bought Chris Bianco tomatoes, which are quite nice.

While I recommend Bianco’s restaurants- a lot.. this book is a massive waste of time for anyone with a skill set beyond baking a frozen pizza. I love this genius’s ability to truly make magic in the kitchen but found zero insight as a home enthusiast in advancing my pizza skill set. I’m disappointed that he spent no time talking about what flour and why. I’m disappointed that he spent one sentence on San Marzano tomatoes. I’m disappointed that he never talked about grilling vs. an oven or wood vs coal in a pizza oven. I couldn’t care less about his friendship with Jimmy Kimmel.Chris- you are better than this!
