This book turned out so much better than I had been expecting. In all honesty, I had been debating whether I really NEEDED this book before my finger accidently-on-purpose clicked the purchase button. In the weeks leading up to that moment I thought, "Do I really want to read a book filled purely with character development on all the people in this series when all I really care about is Jack, Death, and Evie?" It turns out that yes, I truly did need a bit of background on some the Major Arcana. Why? Because it turns out that there are some seriously cool characters in this story that will break your heart, fill you with hope, and make you giggle like a crazy person when you read their personal chapters.I admit that not every character was my cup of tea, and more than once I struggled to remember what parts some of them had played in the series already. HOWEVER, I fell head-over-heels for some of them. Stellan, for example, cracked me up! He was so witty and interesting as he explained his strange situation. His voice leapt off the pages, and I felt like I really got to know his personality within his little chapter. Calanthe is another one whose story pulled me in unbelievably fast. Her sweet encounters with Joules, the Tower, left me smiling uncontrollably. They were so flirty and fun, and afterwards I felt amazed that Mrs. Cole could do this to me--make me feel so much for two characters I barely knew. Similarly, Circe's story ruined me--in the best way, of course. I was thrown into a different kind of romance that included the sweetest backstory imaginable and absolutely lovely, lighthearted dialogue. I had more than a few crocodile tears dotting my cheeks by the time I finished her chapter.Overall, Mrs. Cole makes you connect with each character in a remarkably deep way within just a few pages of each chapter. I truly loved this book for all the feels it gave me when I really hadn't been expecting more than some info on the powers and whatnot all the characters wield. All the stories within this book are interesting at the very least. I also want to note that since this book doubles as an organized guide filled with all the details about The Game, I now have a better understanding of who's who and know how everything started. Of course, after everything I'm extra eager for the next book to read about not just Jack and Death and Evie, but also all the other players who I now know have their own interesting plans...

Remains to be seen if this is necessary for the series, but it was a fun read. You don't realize just how many characters we have not seen yet in this series that can take the story to very different levels. I kind of feel this is more for the TV adaptation of this series, to expand the stories and extend the possibilities, obviously the show can't be all Evie Green all the time. But some of this is really not for teens or young adults. There is nothing too explicit described in detail, but there are scenarios of sex and violence I think is appropriate for an 18 or older audience. I have kind of felt that the whole series is a little more adult than young adult to be honest. I don't think I'd let my children read this and for sure not this extra book. But for adults, this is an excellent series. The sneak peak was just cruel though. LOL thankfully I only have to wait 2 more weeks for it to arrive. But It's been a long time since there has been addition to this series. It's been a very long wait. On a cliffhanger. This was a nice fast read to ramp things back up again.

I love this series! Love. It. I pretty much pre-ordered this and the next installment without even caring what the description said. However, you should know going in that this book is not really a story. It is not the next chapter of the series. The book description should really be more clear about what it is. It is basically a character guide of all the Arcana, with some anecdotes thrown in-some of which we have already read in other books (although some from different viewpoints). It does give a story of the start of the games, and a better description of the flash. It is nice to get backstory on all the arcana characters, but it isn't really a book/story. Each arcana gets a short chapter (for lack of a better term), which includes a list of things like name, aka, powers, skills, weapons, tableau, icon, characteristics, and who they were before the flash. Some Arcana then have a short story line of their lives leading up to the flash (not all, and some look redacted). I don't know if it is worth the cost, but I probably would have bought it any way, even if I had known (really, it is still just $3.99).

I just finished reading Day Zero and I literally am blown away. What Ms. Cole can do with so few pages and where she takes her readers...i am spellbound. I was sincerely surprised that the book has finished, just as it was getting good...but at least, her next full length "Arcana Rising" is just two weeks away (whew).I'll be honest...I had my doubts with this one. I wanted to know what happened after the horrible cliff hanger from the last book. I wasn't all that interested in knowing about what the other characters were up to or their state of mind before the flash. But now, i realized the brilliance of this book because it lets you know the players as well as keeps it both real and fresh. It's a reminder still that the game is one for the young, a majority of whom are good ones, thrust into that scene unexpectedly. It's thrilling and slightly mad at the same time. For all the fans out there, pick this book up. It's a short but worthy addition to the collection. And for those encountering the series for the first time, all I can say is: what are you waiting for? Grab a copy or two, like I did. This series is a must read! No regrets.
