The growth of our hero was handled very well and he is a likable fellow and as tough as needed. I thought the insecurities of our heroine were over played a little bit but she came through as needed needed. Rape is part of the plot but off screen. This is good western fiction!
These books may not have the current type of morals or ethics accepted in society today but they take up a more important human quality, decency and honor. While not perfect humans Petit's characters are realistic and care about others who also have feelings, character and morals to guide them through the tough life of a western pioneer. Things get dicey and that spreads desensitization in many a human where life is short and hard.O.
I have bought a number of CJ's books (24 I think) I really enjoyed them BUT I quit. Errors in grammar like he helped her with her burrow when he was helping her with her burro. Name that are continually messed up. Anne Jordan become Anne Jacoby. Dan becomes Sam, etc. and the use of non-existent word like four consonants together making a word. It got to the point I was bookmarking the errors when I decided my role as a reader was not to be an editor. So buyer beware that the author does not care enough to have a proofreader, use a line editor or grammar checker, or track his characters. CJ churns out the books with little regard for the details required in writing as opposed to telling. To make this simple I am going to copy and paste. The reason being if CJ had taken the time to correct these glaring problems I would have given the books a 4 or 5 on content. But these are consistent problems with all the books I have read.
I must start by saying this book was not intended to be funny, however when I readthe part about the ranch cowboys "converting heifers to steers" I laughed for a solid10 minutes!!! We raised cattle when I was growing up in Oklahoma and being able to convert girls to castrated boys would have been a miracle!!!!I loved the story line and all the action! Keep up the good work!Crockett White
I really enjoy this author. I like Westerns and some romance. This book has both like most of this author 's books. A young man who sets out to find his Mother and has many different encounters along the way. Learns how to shoot better with many different guns. Saves a girl, finds a dog, helps save a trading post twice, finds love and eventually his Mom. The dog is very smart and special....saving the young man and others. So many different encounters in the young man's quest. I don't like when this author 's books end. I have to start a new one soon. Enjoy!!!
CJP has written an 1885 era western about a young man and woman. The man is searching for his Mother and the woman dying after being raped and left for dead. They save each other and continue to find their place in the lives of those around them. A dog befriends the two and the three some begin to live. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
The usual great people, plot and story lines. Will remind you of Zane Grey with more romance. HOWEVER, YOU HAVE TO GUESS IF THE AUTHOR GREW UP AROUND ANIMALS. You cannot geld a heifer to make a steer. A heifer is a female cow which has not yet had a calf, or sometimes only one. A steer is a male animal whose balls have been surgically removed. The cow is called a bull before the surgery and a food resource afterwards. Please fix this. It is in more than one novel and very distracting.
Thus is the third books of Mr Petit,s books and really enjoyed them. They are full of adventure , his characters witty and real.
