With the onset of spring, I begin my traditional hunt for the latest in gardening-related books. This runs from those dealing with the early stages of gardening, such as seed sowing and planting, to how-to books on deck, patio, and container gardening, and then to those for season's end on harvesting, canning, preserving, pickling, and baking. Drink the Harvest by Nan K. Chase and DeNeice C. Guest, is unique among all of those that I have read in my gardening experience, and it is considerable.Firstly, it is visually stunning. Eye candy is what any book on gardening and harvest reaping should be. This book has this in spades. Secondly, it is unique in its treatment of the harvesting process, opting for making juices rather than the traditional jams, jellies, and pickling processes dealt with by many other books. I found this concept intriguing. I mean, who doesn't like juice?But the book doesn't stop with mere juice, there are also instructions for making wines, teas, ciders and meads. Mead! Honestly, I devoured this book like I would a suspense novel, heart pounding at the prospect of making my own versions of the store bought juices that I have been buying for decades. The chapter on garden syrups was particularly intriguing because syrups give way to so many additional creations.Not strictly a cookbook on juice making, it is also a valuable gardening guide with instructions on how to plant your own Beverage Garden (how I love this idea!). This book does what no other book I've read has managed to do, namely to squeeze the last bit from the garden harvest, and look at what is currently growing with new eyes. In short, I learned something here. I learned a lot of something, and, because I tend to be a bit on the impatient side, could not wait for the harvest to try some of the recipes. I made the strawberry juice (using local harvest berries), raspberry, and mixed berry juices. This stuff is amazing! Healthy, delicious, incredibly fresh, and eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head delicious.For those of you who have successful gardens, or, perhaps, too successful, and find yourself with an over abundance of produce with the threat of spoilage hanging over your head, you would be wise to buy this book. Rather than stuff yourself with another salad, fresh vegetable, or grilled tomato, relax and have a cocktail made from your own homemade juice.Cooks looking for something new to add to their considerable repertoire would be similarly advised to give this book a look. Imagine creating marinades, soups, and salad dressings from juice and sauces that you made yourself. If you are looking for a beginner book, this is an excellent choice. It covers all the basics in an easy to follow format, it is a beautiful book with photo instructions, and it includes a broad range of recipes, juice, wine, syrups, meads, kombucha, (not beer), and different ways to preserve them. The recipes use fairly natural ingredients to balance the acidity.If you are in the middle of your wine career, and you already have the equipment and the basics down, or if you are already familiar with canning, much of this book will be review, or too basic. They do not go into measuring acidity or brix, and there aren't a lot of wine specific recipes, although there are several I have not come across in other books. Overall I'm glad I bought it to read through, but I will pass it on immediately to a friend who is just starting out.

…but it might be a good idea to read more cider, mead (or whatever the drink of choice) books for a greater level of instruction if you find something you like.Beautifully photographed with a generally good resources section (if you haven't got an ingredient it comes up short on that) and all sorts of recipes. It looks so good and ought to be a great book to at least start out with.

Really beautiful and helpful book with lots of visual aids and great recipes. Fair warning; a really solid recipe for making grape wine from grapes (instead there is a recipe for grapes to grape cider and one for grape cider to wine).

This was a fantastic walk through the annals of what to do with your leftover harvest. I love that it covered such a diverse group of topics and that it really gave a lot of information. The photography was beautiful as well. Everything about this book was a pleasure to read.

Lots of good recipes with well explained steps.

I like this book for the ideas, pictures and ease of use.

I was hoping it had more about juicing with a steam juicer.
