The portrait section is preceded by a full and scholarly overview of the painter and an outline chronology of his life in the context of European events, and it is followed by Aileen Ribeiro's fascinating essay, "Fashion in the Work of Winterhalter." The "catalog" that follows is a complete description of each portrait, with a full discussion of the painting's subject, size, and provenance, a description of the work, exhibitions in which it has appeared, and much other artistic and historic information. Also included is an annotated edition of Franz Wild's list of Winterhalter's paintings of 1894, an index to Wild's list, and an index of sitters and subjects. A small, charming section of drawings, watercolors, and prints completes the package. The volume is handsomely produced, with the highest quality reproductions. I’ve always loved the painting of Eugenia and the lady’s in waiting. The brush strokes capture the intricate lace and taffeta bows. This book is full of pictures where you can see great detail.
A stunning book with dozens of gorgeous portraits. Winterhalter could make anyone look beautiful! I think he painted the loveliest portraits of that era. I had to get a used copy as the new ones werent available or extremely expensive but i highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in European history or Art in general. It is truly a gorgeous book.....
Years ago, I discovered a copy at the library and it now holds the record as the book I've checked out the most often. This is because it does such justice to the work of this outstanding portrait artist. The reproductions are magnificent. One can deservedly stand in awe at well drafted, perfectly colored, and dazzlingly illuminated images done without modern advantages such as photography. In fact, I wonder if he might have been ruined had he possessed them. His sense of precision with color, form, and presentation was exceptional. There may not be a unit of measure small enough to mark his proximity to perfection in some of the paintings documented by this publication.It appears that he was less inspired by his male subjects, in which he drops back to garden variety "Professional" quality. Where he shines are his renderings of vibrant females where his skill has not been exceeded. Factor any measure you wish into the formula: he was very good. Photographs can approach his realism, but dispassionately. His work isn't simply a flexing of artistic muscle, it's a high bar of all around quality that any competent portraitist can admit to be monumental.This book represents a giant in his genre very well.
This is a beautiful book full of high resolution color plates for study, and as far as I know, it is the only book availaible on the work of this great 19th century master of portraiture. It is a pity that this wonderful book is no longer in print. Overall, this book is a great resource for anyone interested in portraiture or 19th century costume, and it is deffinitely worth sixty or seventy dollars, but, good heavens! not one thousand! For all of you searching for a more reasonably priced edition of this book, try buying the French or Spanish version.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter could make anyone look pretty. Even Queen Victoria and her kin, if you see his portraits of them.His paintings are flattering, make the subject look radiant and angelic, cherub-faced. His painting of Victoria's daughter Vicky is particularly beautiful, as are his portraits of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.For anyone who's enjoyed Winterhalter's paintings, this is a great book to have.
I bought this book while I was in London many, many years ago at the National Portrait Gallery (I think). It was one of those items that I saw and just knew I had to have. I've always bee mesmerized by the beautiful detail in the outfits and the lighting he puts his subjects in. He and Gainesborough are two of my favoritie portrait painters. Will never part w/ it.!
